Welcome.
Born from the belief that eating well is a human right and that cities should be territories of opportunity, the Edible Cities movement was created to inspire and promote concrete transformations.
The initiative began after a year of research carried out as part of the German Chancellor Fellowship of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and with the support of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). During 12 months of research in Germany, the project explored how urban agroecology can transform cities into more sustainable, inclusive and connected places with people’s needs.
Edible Cities proposes a dialogue between agroecology, democracy and urban agriculture, sharing results, reflections and ideas to inspire transformative actions. The initiative seeks to strengthen vibrant and resilient communities, where the right to healthy food is guaranteed and cities are redesigned as spaces for coexistence, sustainable production and social justice.

Edible Cities:
an agroecological guide for fairer cities
The guide explores how urban agroecology can transform cities into more just, sustainable and inclusive spaces. Based on research conducted between Brazil and Germany, it presents key concepts, case studies and recommendations to strengthen public policies aimed at food security and sovereignty.
It proposes solutions that integrate food production, social inclusion and urban sustainability. It provides practical inspiration for managers and communities in building edible cities.

“Hunger is the biological expression of sociological ills.”
